I am a student. I do not have $15 a month for a dictation app. I barely have money for groceries some weeks. and I know most students are in the same boat.
So let me show you what is actually free. Not "free trial" free. Not "free for 5 minutes" free. Actually free.
Option 1: Windows Dictation (Win + H)
This is the one most people do not know about. It has been built into Windows 10 and Windows 11 since 2018. You do not need to install anything.
How to use it:
- Open any text field. Notepad, Word, Chrome, whatever.
- Press Win + H.
- Click the microphone icon or just start talking.
- Press Win + H again to stop.
What it does well:
- Basic transcription is surprisingly accurate
- Works in almost any Windows app
- Completely free, no limits
- No account needed
- Works offline on Windows 11 (with the right settings)
Where it struggles:
- Punctuation is basic. You have to say "period" and "comma" explicitly.
- It does not learn your vocabulary over time.
- No AI cleanup. What you say is what you get, filler words and all.
- Accuracy drops in noisy environments.
My experience: I use Windows dictation for quick stuff. Jotting down ideas, writing short emails, filling in forms. For anything longer than a few paragraphs, I switch to something else.
Accuracy: Around 80-85% for me. Good enough for drafts, not good enough for final submissions.
Option 2: Google Docs Voice Typing
This is the one I use most for essays and long-form writing. It is free, it works in any browser, and the accuracy is noticeably better than Windows dictation.
How to use it:
- Open Google Docs in Chrome.
- Go to Tools > Voice typing (or press Ctrl + Shift + S).
- Click the microphone icon.
- Start talking.
- Click the microphone again to stop.
What it does well:
- Better accuracy than Windows dictation, probably 88-92%
- Handles punctuation naturally. You can say "period" or "new paragraph" and it understands.
- Completely free with no time limits.
- Works on any computer with Chrome. Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook.
- Auto-saves as you go because it is Google Docs.
Where it struggles:
- Requires internet. No offline mode.
- Only works in Google Docs. You cannot dictate into Word or Notion or VS Code.
- You have to manually copy-paste your text into other apps.
- Google processes your audio on their servers. If that bothers you, skip this one.
My experience: This is my go-to for essay writing. I open a Google Doc, hit Ctrl + Shift + S, and just talk through my ideas. The flow is smooth. The accuracy is good enough that I spend maybe 10% of my time fixing errors instead of 30%.

- Release F9. Your text appears in whatever app you are using.

- AI cleanup removes filler words ("um," "uh," "like") automatically.
- Supports multiple AI backends. Groq (free tier), Gemini (free tier), or local Ollama (completely free, runs on your machine).
- Voice snippets. You can set shortcuts for things you type a lot. I have one for my email address and one for common code patterns.
- Zero telemetry. No account. No data sent anywhere if you use Ollama.
- Completely free. No subscriptions, no limits, no paywalls.
Where it struggles:
- Windows only. No Mac or Linux support yet.
- Setup takes about 10 minutes. Not hard, but not zero-click like Google Docs.
- The UI is functional but not pretty. I am a developer, not a designer.
- If you use cloud APIs (Groq, Gemini), you are dependent on their free tiers. Those can change.
My experience: I use Rota AI for coding and for writing in apps that are not Google Docs. When I am working in VS Code, I hold F9 and dictate comments, documentation, even some code. It is not perfect for code, but for comments and docstrings it works great.
Accuracy: With Groq's Whisper model, I get around 90-93% accuracy. With Ollama running locally, it depends on which model you use. The small model is fast but less accurate. The medium model is slower but gets me to about 91%.

Step 1: Enable Windows Dictation

Tips for Better Dictation
Regardless of which tool you use, these tips will improve your results:
Get close to your mic. This is the single biggest factor. If you are using a laptop mic, make sure you are within 12 inches. If you can afford a $20 USB mic, even better.
Speak clearly but naturally. You do not need to over-enunciate. Just talk like you are explaining something to a friend. The AI models are trained on natural speech.
Use punctuation commands. Say "period," "comma," "new paragraph," "question mark." It feels weird at first. After a day or two, it becomes automatic.
Dictate in chunks. Do not try to dictate a whole essay in one go. Do a paragraph, pause, review, then continue. This keeps the error rate down and your sanity intact.
Build a vocabulary list. Keep a note of words the dictation gets wrong. Names, technical terms, whatever. Over time, you will learn which words to watch out for.
Edit after, not during. This is the most important tip. Get your thoughts out first. Fix mistakes later. Editing while dictating is like pressing the brake and accelerator at the same time.

A: It depends on the tool. Google Docs handles accents reasonably well. Windows dictation is hit or miss.
