TL;DR: Wispr Flow is a great product but $15/month adds up. Here are 5 free (or freemium) alternatives for Windows. Not all of them are good. I tested each one before building my own.

I tried Wispr Flow last year. Genuinely loved it. The way it understood what I was saying, cleaned up my speech, and dropped polished text into whatever app I was using.

Then my 14-day trial ended. The price: $15 per month. $180 per year.

I am a student. I could not justify that cost. So I started looking for alternatives. Some were free but limited. Some were cheap but not open source. Some worked on Mac but not Windows.

After testing everything, I built my own. It is called Rota AI and it is completely free and open source.

Why People Want Wispr Flow Alternatives

Wispr Flow is a good product. It raised $81 million. It works on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android. The AI cleanup is solid. The onboarding is smooth.

But $15 per month adds up. The free tier gives you 2,000 words per week. That sounds like a lot until you realize a single long email can use 200 words. Ten emails and you are done for the week.

So people search for alternatives. Here are the ones that actually work.

Free. MIT license. Windows only. Works offline with Ollama.

This is what I built after realizing I could not afford Wispr Flow. It does the same core thing: hold a hotkey, speak, get clean text in any app.

Press Win + H and start talking. Works in any text field.

The problem: it is basic. No AI cleanup. No context awareness. No voice snippets. It transcribes what you say, filler words and all.

For quick notes or short messages, it works. For serious writing or coding, you will want something better.

Google Docs Voice Typing

Free. Any browser. Chrome works best.

Open Google Docs, go to Tools > Voice typing, click the microphone. Uses Google's speech recognition, which is decent.

But it only works inside Google Docs. You cannot use it in VS Code, Slack, or any other app. If you write exclusively in Google Docs, this works. Otherwise, too limited.

Otter.ai Free Tier

Free for 300 minutes per month. Web, iOS, Android.

Otter.ai is a transcription tool, not a dictation tool. It records audio and transcribes it later. The workflow is different: record first, get the transcript, then copy-paste it where you need it.

Good for meetings and interviews. Not great for real-time dictation into arbitrary apps.

Dictation.io

Free. Browser-based. No installation.

Open the website, click the mic, talk. That is it.

The problem: incredibly barebones. No AI cleanup. No context awareness. No offline mode. You need internet to use it at all.

It exists. It is free. But I would not rely on it for anything important.
